Yoga with Joahnna

Private Vinyasa yoga in Metro Manila

The style most people picture. You move from one posture into the next with your breath, and you will be warm by the end. The most physical of the four. If you want to be warm and slightly out of breath, start here.

What Vinyasa actually is

Vinyasa means putting things in a particular order. In practice it means the postures are strung together into a sequence and you keep moving, one shape into the next, rather than stopping and starting. The sequence changes from session to session, so it never turns into a routine you can do on autopilot.

Who it suits

If you want to be worked, and would rather be warm than still. It is also the quickest way to learn the shapes, because you meet each one several times in a session.

What a session feels like

Continuous. We warm up, build to something that takes real effort, then come down and finish on the floor. You will be breathing hard in the middle and not at the end.

Sessions run 60, 75, 90 or 105 minutes. Mats, blocks and straps. A towel and water within reach is a good idea.

Questions about Vinyasa

How hard is it?

As hard as your breath allows. The pace follows your breathing, so when that gets ragged we slow down. There is a resting posture you can take at any point without asking.

How is Vinyasa different from Ashtanga?

Ashtanga is the same fixed sequence every session. Vinyasa changes each time. Ashtanga is generally the more demanding of the two, so if you like knowing exactly what is coming and want the structure, Ashtanga is the better fit.

Will I sweat?

Probably, especially in a condo without the aircon running. Wear something you can move in properly and keep a towel nearby. If the room is very warm we can shorten the standing sequence and spend longer on the floor.
